Getting over writer's block

Writers may experience moments of incredible inspiration when articles or even book chapters seem to write themselves. Other times it may seem that the writing well is dried up and the writer stares at an empty screen. Writer's block is experiencing the inability to find something new to write about. What are some things that help avoid or overcome the pitfalls of writer's block?

1.) Organize for Rapid Writing

One of the best ways to avoid or overcome writer's block is to create an ongoing folder of ideas. The folder may contain clippings from newspapers, magazines, or even segments of books that can be used to spur on ideas. The idea folder should contain the various ideas that the writer has regarding a number of different projects. There always seem to be ideas that come during times of writing that do not relate to the current project or article. Simply jot the basic idea down and write enough to remember the idea later. Then file the idea sheets into the folder for later use.

Create a second folder as an ongoing working file to hold various outlines and ideas that can easily be new articles. This folder should be used as a holding area for those ideas that come while writing other projects. Using index cards for simple outlines can accomplish the same need. These outlines can be pulled at anytime when fresh writing ideas are needed.

Create a third folder for ongoing research. This folder should contain research that can be used in quick order to write or at least get an article started. Research can be as simple a few articles collected on the internet to hundreds of pages of research for writing an in depth article. Longer pieces of research are identified in individual files, on the computer for easy location. There may be a need to create an individual folder on the desktop for all of the research.

All of these can also be accomplished electronically by creating new folders within the computer desktop. Be sure to make clear titles for each of the folders to keep the various work from becoming confused. Organization is key in this method of avoiding writer's block. The folder system will only be as good as the writer's ability to manage it.

2.) Develop a Project Plan

Each individual project will have different requirements and different aspects to consider. Developing a specific plan for each project may not be advisable but for longer projects, a plan is essential. The project plan helps organize thoughts and research together to create the article or book
