If you ask anybody that owns a website or has a blog, they will likely tell you that the hardest thing is trying to attract visitors to come to your website, and then trying to get them to come back time after time. It's a very difficult thing to do and there is no clear cut way to make it happen, but there are some things that you can try to help.

If you're willing to pay for advertising, that is one way that doesn't take a whole lot of effort to get visitors to your website, just some money. However, along with that, the visitors probably won't be as quality of visitors. If people are coming to your website because they were paid to, as opposed to because they wanted to, they probably won't stay very long, carefully look at your site, or come back again. If you have a lot of resources you might want to consider this, but for most people this is simply not a practical, efficient solution.

If you're not willing to pay for advertising, it can be a little harder and take a little more work, but can be a rewarding and beneficial experience. One important thing is search engine optimization. One way to help here is if there are other websites similar to yours in your niche, you might try to approach them to "swap links," or get them to post a link to your site on their site. This helps for a couple of reasons:

1) Referral traffic. People clicking directly on that link on their site to just come directly to your site. This can be a good thing if the site linking to you has high traffic and a lot of visitors.
2) Incoming links helps optimization. The more links you have, generally the better, especially if the links are coming from a high page rank. This will help you get higher in the search engines, which can bring in a lot of visitors. While referral traffic can get you big bursts of traffic, the high page rank from good search engine optimization is a good way to get links on a consistent basis over a long-term basis.

The other thing that you must have is quality content. Give visitors a reason to come to your website. Getting them to come originally is nice, but its only half the battle. Getting them to come back consistently is just as important, and that's where it helps to have quality content. If there is not enough quality content to your site (and update it frequently!), then there will be no reason for people to keep coming back and giving you more traffic.

So marketing and advertising are the best ways to get visitors to your website, combined with providing good and valuable content. If you do all of these things, your traffic levels will shoot up. It might not be right away, but eventually you will get more and more visitors to your website.
