The kitchen is a very dangerous place. Electricity, water, and or gas are a lethal combination not to mention hot fat or water, knives, and glass, and, it is a perfect place for germs as well to gather. In the UK alone a lot of people report that they have eaten something that disagreed with them and made them feel ill, not just from eating out do the complaints come from but from the home too, so for this reason here a few safty tips.
The number One rule in the kitchen, is or should be, Wash your hands, before you do anything else.
Never leave knives or glass in a sink of water, they probly cannot be seen, so wash them after use and put them away either in a drawer or knife holder.
Always clean up as you work, this also allows you more space to work. Read any instructions regading the cooking process of any foods, or follow a trusted recipe.
Never under cook chicken or pork.
Turn off all appliances after use.
Do not cut raw meat and then cut something else with the same knife or board.
Always use clean cloths and warm soapy water on work surfaces and cupboards, sten sterilise to prevent germs.
The fridges and freezers should always been clean, with raw food on the lower shelves, put nothing hot in either.
Never put to much oil in the chip pan and never leave them unattended, they can have devastating effect when they catch fire.
You should always keep a knife sharp, because if the knife is blunt it will cause you to apply more pressure and if your knife slips you will injure yourself greater than a sharp one.
Being one of the most used rooms in the house, there are generally more than one user so it is important for all to be aware of some of the above guidelines i have mentioned. Children are often present in the kitchen especially if mums making cake, maybe helping with the picnic basket, or just simply helping themselves to a sandwich, make sure there are no knives where they should not be , or that pot handles can be be reached by a little one.
The kitchen can be a fun and enjoyable place to be, preparing a dinner or party, having a family meal, or simply just having a break with a coffee and a doughnut, there is no need to be worried if your kitchen is clean, read all the cleaning chemical instructions properly , and keep them in a cupboard away from other food and drink. Dispose of rubbish from the kitchen, and keep the floor dry. Last but not least a first aid box is a good idea as well.
