What is life?

Life is Divine. Without Divinity, there is no life. All of life, both physical and non-physical is Divine in nature. That which is animate and that which is inanimate is Divine. God is the whole. Everything that exists within that whole is a part of God. Nothing exists outside of that whole.

Physical life, with its stunning diversity, is a tiny part of God expressing Itself. Human beings are a small part of the miracle of God expressing Itself in physical form. No part of creation is unimportant, none smaller than others. All are equally divine.

So life is God expressing Itself, impressing Itself on both physical and non-physical reality. Human beings are different from the rest of the creatures we know on earth in one important respect. It is both our blessing and our curse.

We have been given free will. Now I believe that all consciousnesses, from subatomic particles to universes, also have free will. But free will always operates within the confines of individual consciousness. The cells in our bodies have free will within the confines of being a certain kind of cell. A blood cell cannot suddenly choose to be a skin cell. A cell is fully accepting of its nature and never thinks to go beyond what it is. (More on this later.)

The blessing of free will is that we are free to make our own choices. Making those choices, we create our own experiences. Truly we have the gift of the gods/goddesses. We create our own reality.

The greatest choice we have is to accept or reject our spiritual nature, to accept or reject the reality of the Divine. Because we have free will, we can make the wrong choices. That is the curse of free will. We can make mistakes. We can take actions that go against our own basic nature. We can commit evil because we can choose to do so.

As human beings, it seems to me that we are here simply to find out who we are, to remember our connection with the divine. This connection is part of our creation. It is coded in our DNA. It is as close as our beating heart and the breath we breathe. Nevertheless, free will allows us to forget this or to ignore it. We have the ability to live as if we were separate beings, to deny our divine heritage.

The rest of nature does not have this problem. That is why nature is such a great spiritual teacher. The flora and fauna are, in their terms, already enlightened. They are aware of their divinity moment to moment. They glorify in their own being without ego. They are fulfilled being what and who they are.
