They should absolutely give the money back. I live in Canada and even I am outraged by this breach of trust. These people are criminals. They have taken the bailout and embezzled it amongst themselves. When I saw this on the news I couldn't believe it. They try to defend themselves by saying that it was in their contracts to get the bonuses, but let's be honest here. If it wasn't for the bailout money they wouldn't have a contract because they wouldn't have a job. So give it back.
Think of it this way. Imagine someone you knew was going to declare bankruptcy and lose everything and they needed ten thousand dollars to get out of it, (hypothetically of course) and you were kind enough to lend them the money. Then you hear that instead of avoiding bankruptcy they took the money and went on a vacation and blew it all.. Wouldn't you be pretty angry? Wouldn't you want them to give the money back?
I believe this is a slap in the fact to American taxpayers and a sign that AIG doesn't care about you. Not much of an insurance company if you ask me. Can you look me in the face and say that you will trust them to do your insurance and not just spend all your contributions on themselves? AIG has just sealed their fate. They will never get help from the government again. I hope President Obama does force them to pay it back. Also I hope he revokes the bailout and lets them go under. This is not a company I would want around.
Doesn't it seem a little strange that in such an economic downturn that an insurance company as large as AIG would do something this foolish? If you have any insurance policies with AIG I would suggest cancelling them and going with someone else.
The American taxpayers should not stand for this. They should go out and do something about it. Boycott them. Picket them. Force them to return the money. If they don't, let them go bankrupt. Let's see them quote their contracts then.
All in all this is the worst thing they could have done. If you are arguing against returning the money then you are crazy as well. You are the kind of person that would fit right into this company and should write them a resume. They would hire you for sure.
AIG needs to be taught a lesson. Now is the time to do it. Do not let them get away with it. Because if they get away with it, other companies will do it to. If you let someone walk all over you, they will continue to walk all over you and others will join in.
