How to survive a zombie Apocalypse

A zombie apocalypse is something that no one wants to really deal with. For all we know, it might never happen. However, there are those who live by the motto "plan for the worst." With that in mind, here is a list of things to do if your town becomes a home for the living dead.

1. Know your enemy.

There are many types of zombies, from the classic shuffling zombie to the modern rage-filled zombie. Knowing which one you are dealing with can save your life and those of other survivors.

Classic

The classic, slow moving zombie is probably the most common type of undead. These are usually long dead. Their outdated clothing easily identifies them. Often, they have dirt smeared over their skin and clothing. Their eyes have a shrunken, blank appearance. Another give-away is the disheveled hair, which is a result of dragging itself out of a grave.

Modern

The modern-style zombie seems to be only recent dead. It appears to limit itself to the dead of within twenty or so years. This particular breed is the most dangerous. They move with a speed that is unrivaled and are capable of overtaking an athletically fit, running human. They wear modern clothing and look normal for the most part. When you suspect that you are dealing with this type of undead, check for fresh blood. Blood will be somewhere on its body since it does not understand the concept of "clean".

Something else to be aware of with this creature is the fact that it seems to have a basic knowledge. However, it is unknown whether the knowledge stems from memories of its former life, if it is a sign of true intelligence, or is purely instinctual.

2. Surviving.

Now that you have a basic idea of what you are dealing with, you need to know how to survive an apocalypse. Here is a tip: Plan for the worst.

Stock Up

You should already have a stock of food, for other "plan for the worst" emergencies. Be sure to include bottled water. You might want to add boards, nails, and hammers to your list. Also, a machete is quite the weapon to have on hand for any possible problems. Other weapons to include are pistols, probably of the 9mm caliber and up, sub-machine guns, and at least one sawn-off shotgun. Remember that the shotgun is useless unless you are within 10 feet. Otherwise, it will be like pelting the dead with salt.

You might want to spend some time on the shooting range to get used to the handing of your various weapons. Picking up a gun for the first time during a zombie apocalypse is not a good idea. Movies may be able to carry it off, but your chances of being a "natural shot" are not very good.
