Survivor Season 18: Tocantins

Even after all these years, I have yet to lose my interest in Survivor, despite good-natured ribbing from all my friends, although I will have to say that my interest has been waning a bit, mostly because it's getting harder and harder to identify with the characters. The show will probably be shelved in the next few years, but I'll support it as long as it's on.

This season's characters have won me over much more quickly than the last few seasons, even though I'm still missing Sugar greatly. I have already made my pick for winner, Taj. I was skeptical at first, after she told her tribe that she was married to Eddie George. I figured that she would have been voted out at their first opportunity, but to my surprise, she's persevered. I believe her honesty will take her a long way, though I didn't know how much that theory would be tested tonight.

With all that being said, let's get down to tonight's episode:

Taj and Stephen find the hidden immunity idol in the opening sequence. I'm not sure if her strategy to share her knowledge about the idol is the right strategy, but it's been working for her so far. Her networking skills are impeccable, which has been the ticket for any Survivor's longevity in this game.

Timbira's Brendan had a plan that almost backfired on him when Sierra found out about his alliance with Taj and Stephen from Jalapao before he got a chance to tell her that she was a part of it herself. He quickly smooths things over with her by filling her in quickly.

The reward challenge was crazy. The reward was amazing, but a little premature in my mind. Usually the restaurant reward is withheld until it can be properly appreciated much later in the game. The challenge was very physical and watching the dizzy Survivors navigate the balance beam was priceless. But with a three to one Jalapao victory, it was mostly uneventful.

The spread at Charmin Cafe was quite respectable. This was Taj's opportunity to try to get more familiar with her home tribe. It is obvious that she is at a huge disadvantage by spending as much time on Exile Island. There seems to be quite a bit of dissention among the ranks of Jalapao as to her absenteeism, so it makes me nervous for her. If she has any hopes of making it to the merge, she has a lot of damage control to do.

I'm still not sure about the letters from home thing and what that added to the reward challenge, except to say that hopefully it was a morale booster for Jalapao.

Timbira is starting
