A home computer does not need the same level of security that an enterprise computer needs but sure it needs some security. This guide is exactly for that: To tell you how to easily secure you home computer.
Shall we start with the internet security? I have seen very important people using their laptop to access the internet and the only security they have is zero. They use Windows XP still, they do not have their firewall on, they do not have any kind of anti virus, nor free nor professional, they do not have an anti spyware program running on the computer, in sum they are completely open to compromise. Why do they do such thing to their computer security? Because they know nothing about computer security. They think ignorance is heaven, but when something serious happens to them, they immediately stop believing that.
You need to have in your computer a good firewall. Unfortunately windows xp and vista firewall is not good enough. It's Microsoft effort trying to reduce the bad security that windows computers have... A failed solution. They only protect you against very basic attacks. Instead you should download and install Zone Alarm. They invented the firewall thing and they are the best in protecting your computer all the time. They have a professional and a free version, and you should get the free. Good enough for home computers.
Anti virus and anti spyware are equally important. Even with a firewall you can get virus from time to time. Just by downloading and opening a file in your computer can permanently damage it unless you have a anti virus and an anti spyware protecting you all the time. free solutions are good enough but if you need more security you should always upgrade to pro. Just stay away from Norton anti virus. It's software is on the top less secure software for the computer and I have experienced that in person! The worst software on the market today is the norton 360.
Finally you need to protect your computer with a good password on the windows login. This way when someone steals your hard disk they will have a tough time recovering all that information out of your hard disk. This alone is not enough. True crypt should also give you a good hand in protecting it even more. Install it because it's free then encrypt your entire hard disk and check how good protected it is now. If someone steals the computer, they will get zero inforamtion from it.
