Have you ever walked into a room in someone's house and suddenly felt agitated for no particular reason? You probably did not think of it at the time, but there are a number of reasons you may feel either restless or calm when entering a room. Color is one of the largest factors in provocation of the senses.
Consider the way you feel when you walk into a particular room in your own home. Do you feel calm when entering your bedroom at night? Or do you tend to feel more irritated and restless? These are a few colors to consider when decorating your home, all of which may help you feel more relaxed.
Green
Green is a cool color that is often associated with nature and vegetation. Green is a fresh and rejuvenating color which enhances the feeling of tranquility and calm in a home. Green is also a great color in a home with children who are just learning how to read.
Blue
Another cool color, blues are associated with the sky and water. Blue evokes a feeling of serenity and may be used in a bathroom to create a spa-like feel. Blue, however, is also associated with a feeling of sadness and may not be a good choice for those who are prone to depression.
Purple
Purple is a color that evokes a majestic feel in a home. Purple is often associated with wealth and wisdom. Cool purple hues also provide a feeling of cool and calm in the home.
Gray
A combination of black and white, gray is a cool, sophisticated color that also evokes a feeling of calm in a room. Gray is one of the neutral colors. An elegant hue, gray may be used as a backdrop for accent colors in a room. It is another color that may cause feelings of depression in some people.
White
White is another neutral color; it reflects all of the light in the color spectrum. White helps a room to feel more spacious. Although it may be a calming color, white can also make a room feel cold and sterile. If used in small doses, white can look quite sophisticated.
You may have noticed already that all of the colors listed above are cool colors. People tend to decorate their homes more with warm colors, but colors such as red and yellow may actually cause feelings of frustration and irritation. Yellow is also known to cause babies to cry more often. It is the cooler colors like blues and greens that will evoke a calm feeling in the home.
What do you feel when you enter a room in your home? Do you feel calm and relaxed, or do you tend to feel more agitated? When decorating your home, keep these cool colors in mind to help create a calm environment for your family.
