Climate change must indeed be addressed and at this point the cause is irrelevant because while we are arguing the cause, the problem is getting worse.
At the end of a three-day conference to revise the information given by the IPCC, hundreds of chief scientists stated emphatically that global warming was rapidly escalating. Furthermore, they agreed that such rapid acceleration could trigger unalterable worldwide climate changes and that immediate action needs be taken.
Recently, melting has been discovered in west Antarctica. The region has shown no increase in temperature and has actually had lower temperatures at times; nevertheless, satellite data has shown melting in a wide area around the entire region.
What's more, glaciers are moving much faster. Faster movement means faster melting. Ice shelves that are holding the glaciers from the sea are also melting faster.
Scientists are seriously concerned because the latest statistics far exceed earlier predictions. Sea levels could rise much faster than once thought which could result in a sudden, unstoppable climate shift.
Previous worst case scenario trajectories predicted a sea level rise of 7 to 23 inches as we near the end of the century, forcing millions to evacuate coastal areas. However, new facts propose that the now faster melting glaciers and ice shelves may raise sea levels even higher, and sooner than once predicted.
Climate change could greatly affect the economy worldwide and therefore needs to be addressed immediately, regardless of the cause; and green investments now will create more sustainable energy-efficient economies for the future.
World population is over seven billion, most of which live in and around cities, rather than countryside areas. This pattern differs from years ago when rural areas were more heavily populated. Consequently, the shift from rural to urban living has furthered the buildup of smog. If the sea rose just one meter, regions in the Northwest would be inundated with flood waters.
A number of scientists agree that if climate change is not addressed soon, it could cause storms, flooding, drought, mass extinction of species, mass migration and could ultimately lead to world war. The poor nations are the ones who will suffer the most as they are exceptionally susceptible to even the smallest levels of climate change.
Meanwhile, as scientists and politicians sort through the facts and come together in an attempt to deal with climate change, what should the average person
