College Life: How to deal with the pressure of being a freshman in college

Getting admitted by a famous university is something of proud and joy. However, college life does not always mean happiness and pleasure or whatever. In fact, for most college freshmen, the first days might not be so good at all, even stressful for some.

The freshman stress comes from many aspects. Entering university means a completely different life, which for most of us, cannot be adapted to in a short time. Courses we take do not increase by much compared to the high school, but they seem much more difficult. And for the first time actually, we need to rely on ourselves to make almost every decision. Besides, living apart from our parents is quite an overwhelming feeling at first, especially for those who have been used to living with parents. And what's more, some economic problems also cause a feeling of intense or stress.

Knowing where the stress comes from, it's much easier for us to figure out what to do to deal with it. Here are some of my suggestions.

1. Go around your campus at the first few days after you move into your dorm. Try to get familiar with the surroundings and the campus that you're going to live in for four years or more. Find out the nearest supermarket where you may go frequently in the future. Find where the gym locates, where your classroom will be. You don't feel good when staying in a place that is totally strange to you.

2. Always remember that you're not alone, unless you want to be isolated. Your first friends may probably be your roommates, but don't stop there, say hi to everyone living in your dorm and everyone you meet at the classroom. Friends help a lot when you're feeling lonely.

3. Try to find a part-time job. This is not only for those who have economic problems, but for most freshmen. Getting something to do is a good way to keep you away from some unnecessary mental problems. And at the same time, you can gain some working experience, which is very important when hunting a job after graduation. And of course, earning some extra money is not a bad thing, huh?

4. Go to the library. The library in your school can offer you almost the knowledge of the whole world, and never let it wasted. For you, a college student, gaining knowledge is much more important than attending parties. Do not get lost in the world of social activities. Make a book list that you want to read. It feels great to be knowledgeable.

5. Never give up your faith, whatever it is. The new environment might cause you to lose faith on yourself. When this happens, you need to look into yourself and think carefully about your goal and dream. What do you want in your life? How will you make it? What can you do now? Write them down and act now.

Always remember that however low you're now feeling, you're not alone. There is always someone who is just suffering the same problem and there're some who are willing to help. Anyway, college life can be a lot of fun; all you have to do is open your eyes. So don't just sit there and think about your "poor life", go out and enjoy your life!
