BREATH OF LIFE
Take the heart out of our body and see the quality without one. Physically speaking, we would die. In essence, this is an analogy of the vital link in which Spirit and Soul belong. We can say 'We've lost the spirit to do something,' and as a result have... no will to carry whatever that something is, out. Or we can also say, 'we feel like a lost soul at the moment.' Simply implying... 'where do we go from here?' When a sense of direction is felt within one's self - even if temporally, and very simply - as in hunting for something in a supermarket, or being with someone where we can feel alone, left out, no link to, etc. the factor which binds us.
Or we can go deeper into the Self, and this is the strongest link to Spirit and Soul. To separate these two, as the question implies, 'what is the difference between Spirit and Soul?' would be that which makes the Self of anybody a divided Soul, or Person. This then would be splitting the Atom of One Self. Even a dictionary connects the two as 'essential essence' and yet under the one word 'soul' it also states 'spiritual principle'. Which becomes the One Link which binds the chain of One Being the Living Entity, as equally vital as one link to bind a chain together. The essential Self is combined into the one reality of all the other elemental parts - links - which make us who we are, and of which we are made up of.
An interesting fact here when it comes to wellness, was an Australian Aboriginal custom and belief. When an old man was brought to another Elder of a Tribe, as not well, it was claimed they, the other elders must find his spirit. Hunting around bushes and under rocks, they finally claimed to have found it. It was no ordinary thing to carry, but a sacred part of this old man's wholeness. So very carefully, two men carried it back - invisible to the eye - and gave it back to the unwell man. Almost immediately, he stood, and together they all rejoiced. Simple as this may sound, it is a very good example of one's Life Essence, as well as well being.
Without a Soul we would be lifeless... or a zombie, which may as well be 'dead' figuratively speaking. The same must be said of Spirit. Just as we have two words, here, and every language has their own which may number more, it still cannot change the fact, One Person is one, and only personalities would divide their Self in number, which would be a normal trait. This is not indicating personality disorders, but a One Element, as a diamond with many facets. So what really is the difference between Spirit and Soul?
They would be no different than expecting Life to exist without both being linked within the One Self. Just as vital as the Energy in Essence referred to as the Breath of Life. The only link of the two-in-one, of breath in, or breath out, which keeps one alive and well.
