Assessing the legitimacy of conspiracy theories

by Daisy Rosario

Created on: March 19, 2009

Secret societies have been constructed and operated with different influencing objectives. Their need for secrecy was motivated by a desire for exclusivity or as defensive guard against being discovered and ridiculed. Exclusivity brought the bonus of distinction, uniqueness, and originality. For those societies which attempted to protect themselves from confrontation, staying "secret" became the way to preservation. They have generated mistrust from non-members, negative assumptions, and hostility which have only strengthened the organization's persistency to stay secret.

Conspiracy theories will have us believing that these secret societies control the world's destiny, from the wars to epidemics to the becoming of our national leaders and even the existance of alien influence and life on earth. Such theories agree that our individual lives rest on the hands of men whose identities are concealed and protected behind the mask of public servitude; that they control our economic well-being, our positions in society, even the condition of our health.

We do not decide anything, but they do...Who? The Freemasons or Gnostics, the Illuminati, the Triads, Templars, the Priory of Sion (Keepers of the Holy Grail), and Skull & Bones among others. Conspiracy theorists call fools those who believe that economic disaster, decaying rescources, wars, and famine occur "naturally"

Every conspiracy theory holds the heart of evil and unwarranted power, paranoia and stories built on babble, half truths, fiction and an eerie blend of history and imaginary events caused more by fear of the unknown and as I mentioned earlier, assumptions. Because they address our fears as industrial and technological cultures, they mock our anxieties and our fears of losing control and identity as a country and as individuals; they target the fears we rest on and randomly worry about at night before bedtime.

For the most part, as long as the acceptance or skepticism of such ideals, has no part in our lives directly, we will continue to feel empowered to entertain our own convictions and withstand those of others. Let us be conscious however of the fact that from time to time, the bare truth of reality has been and will be revealed and exploited in its disturbing, often tragic activities that stem from a clandestine group.

Essentially, there is a requirement to spend more time probing and tales of assumptions and assertions with rationale without the entertaining tempation to feed the curiosity of what could be and "what ifs". Logic and reasonable deduction should supply the search, not so much for truth, but for purposeful, critical thinking.
