Tips for families traveling with special needs children

Traveling with your child who has special needs may take a little more planning on your part then a family with no children with special needs but, in the end it can be just as much fun and rewarding.

Depending upon just what your child's special needs are you will need to start making a list of all the things your child not only can't live without but those things that will make traveling a little more comfortable for them.

Start off by making an appointment with your child's pediatrician. A quick check up before leaving may reveal the start of any illness that may make traveling unbearable for all involved not to mention that finding a pediatrician while you are on vacation to treat an illness is next to impossible. Your pediatrician may be able to see that an ear infection is just starting out or even the beginnings of a sore throat. Your child may need to take medication while you are traveling but will be much more comfortable by doing so. If you are not sure if your child has car sickness on long road trips now is the time to ask your pediatricians advice on what medication to take with you just in case.

Remember to pack for your trip with all scenarios in mind. Clothes for rain or shine, a sweater or light jacket depending on the season. It is far better to bring extra clothing than to be caught without. Does your child have a favorite stuffed animal or blanket? Better bring it along as some children have a more difficult time adjusting to new places and having familiar things around brings them comfort. How about a night light if you are staying in a hotel room or at a relatives home?

If your traveling involves a long road trip in a car then you might want to map it out in advance and plan for frequent breaks along the way. Rest stops for travelers are a great place to get out stretch your legs and break up the monotony of driving long distances. It may take longer to get to your destination but it's worth it in the end to have everybody including the driver in a more relaxed mood.

No matter what mode of traveling you are using, car, bus, train or plane you will need to pack an easily accessible travel bag just for your child in addition to all your other luggage. If your child eats special food or has special dietary needs you are best off packing what you will need and taking it with you. Then there will be no need to worry later about where to find stores or medial supply shops to fill your needs.
