Is it possible to become addicted to writing?

by Laurie Childree

I am an addict, I do not use needles or pop pills my word processor is my supplier and writing my drug. There are endless hours spent developing ideas and thoughts followed by even longer hours putting them onto the page and constant changes. Writing is easily addictive due to the feelings it gives the writer.

Writing is the one thing that a person can take and make their own with no formal training just a desire. While there are a thousand schools offering degrees in specific areas you can teach yourself to write by simply remembering the basics that were learned in elementary school, the rest will come later. Wading through endless submission guidelines and finding your voice is an amazing process.

Those that write seldom realize they are addicted when the signs first appear although those that love the writer will see the signs early. The writer will write about anything and everything as their thirst for writing and increased knowledge can never be satisfied. The writer is constantly looking for new subjects to write about and will research almost anything just to have something to write. Writing is the most fullfilling thing that we can do as we are able to express every emotion known to man through our writing.

A daze will come over the writer as they sit at their computer for hours on end. They often don't realize it until they go to get up from their computers and find themselves a bit dizzy from staring at the screen for so long. This occurs time and again yet the writer continues to push on day after day sometimes for days at a time without thought of stopping.

The writer is only happy when they are writing something so they will attempt to write anything. When they get stuck they often just move onto the next subject just to have something, anything to write on any given day. The writer's best memories of those times they spent struggling over an aritcle or book just to feel the proudest they have ever felt over the work they have done.
Once you begin to write there is no stopping you. You find yourself having withdrawals when you go even a day without writing at your normal time. You begin to get grumpy and will lash out at those that you feel have interrupted your writing even if it was unintentional. Rearranging and rescheduling appointments just to fit in more writing time isn't uncommon.

It is extremely possible to become addicted to writing; it is almost unavoidable in fact for those that have a love of the written word. The love of the written word is one that can't be denied. It must be expressed and the knowledge the writer has must be put to paper for the world to see.
