Houston is definitely a city for those who enjoy watching sports, and there's something for everyone. The city is a sport nut's haven, with everything from professional basketball to Major League Soccer. Here is a list of the professional sports teams located in Houston, Texas.
BASEBALL: HOUSTON
ASTROS
The Astros were founded in Houston in 1962, and belong to Major League Baseball's Central Division; they were formerly known as the Colt .45s. They won the Central Division title four times, in 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2001, as well as a NL Pennant in 2005. The Astros play their games at Minute Maid Park.
BASKETBALL: HOUSTON ROCKETS
Houston's professional men's basketball team is the Rockets, members of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Rockets were founded in 1967, and originally played in San Diego before relocating to Houston in 1971. The Houston Rockets have won four conference titles, four division titles, and two NBA Championships (in 1994 and 1995). The Rockets play at Toyota Center.
FOOTBALL: HOUSTON TEXANS
The Houston Texans are a professional football team, and are a member of the National Football League's AFC South conference. The history of the Texans dates back to the existence and relocation of what was the Houston Oilers- they eventually became the Tennessee Titans. The Houston Texans of today premiered in 2002 as an expansion team. Though they have not won any league or conference championships to date, the Houston Texans are a hometown favorite team. Their home games are played at Reliant Stadium.
WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: HOUSTON ENERGY
Founded in 2001, the Houston Energy is a full-contact, women's professional football team that is a member of the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL). "The Rig" is home field for the Energy, as is located at Pearland High School. Their season runs from April to June, and culminates in the IWFL Championship Weekend in July.
HOCKEY: HOUSTON
AEROS
The Aeros are Houston's professional ice hockey team, and are members of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Aeros started as an expansion team in the International Hockey League in 1994, and play their home games at Houston's Toyota Center. The Houston Aeros won the Calder Cup in 2003.
SOCCER: HOUSTON DYNAMOS
In 2006, Major League Soccer came to Houston in the form of the Houston Dynamo. Though they're a relatively new team, the Dynamo won two back-to-back MLS Cup championships in 2006 and 2007, their first two years in existence. The Dynamo's home field is Robertson Stadium, which is on the University of Houston campus.
