EMPTY HEART
She had the coffee on when he got up
(She was an early riser)
She cooked, she swept, she cleaned, she wept
She got older but no wiser.
She raised 4 children almost by herself
(He was such a busy man)
She sewed, she soothed, she laughed, she cooed
He never thought to lend a hand.
She spent most evenings all alone
(He had to make a living)
She mended, read, phoned friends, she bled
She's the one who did the giving.
She had a hot meal waiting when he got home
(He liked her good home cooking)
She vacuumed, baked, did laundry, raked
He was the one out there a-lookin'.
She just up and left one day
(He still doesn't know why)
He begged, he phoned, he's confused - alone
She left HIM at home to cry.
Chorus:
Now she's gone and he can't see why
(His life just fell apart)
HIS life, HIS dreams
HIS wife, HIS schemes
He's the one with the empty heart.
