What is music?

a four over a four. The upper four means four beats and the bottom four means quarter note. Overall, it means four quarter notes in a bar. A bar represents a section of a music score, and it is divided by the vertical line known as the barline. Without the beat, every musician in a group may simply play at any speed he or she likes which may result in chaos.

Timbre represents the unique sound produced by a musical instruments. For example, the piano does not sound the same as the violin and the guitar does not sound the same as flute.

When you listen to a music composition you may have noticed that each note in the piece seems to have a different length. This difference in length is called rhythm. The rhythm helps make the music sounds less boring and more interesting.

How a musical piece is arranged is known as texture. The various forms of Texture include monophonic, polyphonic, and homophonic. The monophonic texture is the simpliest form of all textures which mainly consists only the melody. The polyphonic texture is a texture where a melody can come in at a different time while the same melody was still being played. This form of texture is more common in Baroque music. The homophonic texture is where various notes are played together

When listen to music especially classical music you may hear certain parts of the composition are louder or softer than the others. The variation in the volume of the compostion while being played is called dynamics. If I remember correctly from the music appreciation class I attended, early musicians before or during the Baroque period could only produce what is known as terrace dynamics due to the restrictions imposed by their musical instruments. Later musicians could produced gradual dynamics allowng them to express their music better.

By knowing how to identify the elements of a piece of music, a person can learn how to appreciate music in a new exciting way. When a musician performs a piece of music, he or she may not be just doing so to entertain but also to convey a message to the listeners. I remember watching on TV at one time about music being used in medicine in an attempt to cure some patients.

Now that you know what music is, you should be able to enjoy it more.
