My preferred answer would be both but in the case that I must choose, I would have to side with home. For me I do enjoy seeing an action flick on the big screen. The special effects when viewed at the theater are more spectacular. That being said, there are a lot of drawbacks to going to the movie theater that cause me to be a bit more picky about what I will go to the movies to see.
When I decide to view a movie at home I have much more control over what time I start watching the movie and therefore when it will end. Also, when it comes to time, I don't have to factor in travel time and the dreaded "looking for a parking spot" that sometimes accompanies going to the movies. Let us not forget that if you are going to see a "blockbuster" must see flick within a few days of it's release and on a weekend, then you should add another 20-30 minutes to be sure you actually get a good seat.
Then there is of course the cost, going to the movies can be a bit expensive, especially if you are going to take the kids along as well. Of course there are cost saving ideas like going early for matinee pricing, cutting back or skipping the snack food (or hiding snacks in your purse or pockets) and using coupons like those found in the "entertainment" book (usually I buy one for $25 and forget to ever use it). Those methods are fine but for me when I do decide to go out and see a movie I don't want to have to skimp on my good time nor plan it in the middle of the day. That being said I would like to remember to take advantage of some coupons or perhaps some sort of special promotion.
Another consideration would be how much control do you want over your environment? In the movie theater you have little to no control. The latest annoyance for me is people who like to check their cell phone during the film. I'm sure people have various reasons for doing this but the light from the phone in a dark theater catches my attention and interrupts my focus on the movie. Not to mention the people who talk, throw things, munch on their food to loud, dig in the emty candy box to get the last junior mint, slurp the last few drops in their drink or have to get past you to go to the bathroom right at the part you've been waiting to see. Yes, I know there are ways to deal with these issues but, none of those methods stop it from interrupting me to begin with and all of the solutions actually will cause more interruption. At home I can control most events that would interrupt me and this allows me
