There are many ways to protect an aging parent, first by calling them to see if everything is alright by helping them make their grocery shopping , this way they can feel they still have the autonomy on their decisions. You can help them to prepare their meals and eat at their apartment or house once awhile or every week to see how they manage in the house and keeping visit them will help their memories with conversation about their activities and friends.
Share some activities with them like playing cards or go to the movies. Or bring them to the library if they still like to read or offer them a personal journal if they like to write, so they can keep memories of their activities and keep their own secrets in their journal, this help to feel less lonely. Choose some activities during the weekdays which you can participate so you will be informed how they manage in their every day duties.
Keep a list of phone numbers which they can feel free to call if anything goes wrong or they don't feel good. But never abandon the aging people to themselves without knowing what is going on in their life. Suggest to accompany them to the doctor office so they won't have to drive. Or suggest to your children to visit them once a while, they will be glad to have visitors and hear fresh news from the family.
If you have some gardening to do, offer them to help you during the summer, if they like gardening they will help to plant their favorite plants and maybe their favorite vegetables. The day will pass very fast and both of you will be enjoying the nature and the sun during summer days. Or ask them if they like to walk maybe there are some parks around your house and they will like to walk and this way they will take fresh air and see people and keep in shape if they like exercises.
Bring them to see some shows or representations this way they will know all the actualities and new representations, this will keep them alive and they will enjoy maybe the restaurant after. This will brake the routine of every day and will keep them actualised with the news and every new events. If they need to go to the drugstore offer them to bring their medicaments so this way you will know if they are taking their medication. It is very important to accompany them without make them feel they are dependant of you but let them talk and offer them to go with them some time so they will feel they are part of the life also.
