Sun falls onto the water,
a million gems for a lost
little girl.
In her palm, she fingers a nickel.
She thinks she is strong,
so strong that they cannot rip
her away from this lake, this jewel
beneath the sky.
Into the teal van she goes,
beside crying mother,
volatile father,
indifferent brother,
back to the city of tears.
