Letting your child watch adult television is a great idea. What could go wrong? You probably want to shield him or her from anything you deem harmful. It is probably true, also, that you believe your morals are superior to anyone that does not have the same view as you. You might even be the type of mother who would go on an active campaign to ban Michelangelo's David for its graphic depiction of the human penis. You could not be more wrong. Let's set the record straight. Although this paper is probably the most controversial thing you will ever read, with the right information and a little participation your baby boy or girl will be just fine.
We all know sex is a very difficult issue in America. It is everywhere, especially in television, the United States' most accessible resource center (next to the net). You do not want little Ethel's mind to be corrupted by television. You worry that what Carrie tells Charlotte in Sex in the City could influence your child into maturity. Fear not Mrs. America, your child can handle most of the things they see. As long as you teach them proper morals they can understand that some things are wrong on television. If they do not like what they are seeing they can just change the channel. And remember this: television stations do not monitor their programs. They do not care about a show's content as long as they get the ratings. Ratings equal money. Sure there are a few shows that teach consequence but the adult entertainment of shows like Married with Children, The Simpsons and The OC are just meant for pure fun. There are no secret messages in adult shows.
Now you may be concerned that if your child watches shows that portray violence or sex you may see your child emulating it, and that they might hurt themselves. That is possible, yes, but what is wrong with imitating a police officer? Besides, kids have been playing cops and robbers for a long time. Now if they are imitating something like the OC and they are dry humping each other like water buffalo that is not wrong at all. Sure it is odd, but dry humping or kissing is a normal part of life. As long as you teach them the difference, it is okay if they act a little strange. If you let your child watch shows that include talking about sex, sexual positions or the like they would not know anything about it to begin with.
