Maxwell Smart( Steve Carrell) is a top analyst for an American Intelligence Agency known as CONTROL. Max however, has aspirations to become a field agent. Despite scoring very well on tests, the Chief of Control (Arkin) doesn't want to promote Max because he feels that Max is too valuable where he is.
Things change when CONTROL headquarters is attacked by KAOS, whose leader is Siegfried, and many agents are killed or their positions are compromised. Max then becomes Agent 86 and is partnered with Agent 99, played by Anne Hathaway.
Max and Agent 99 travel to Russia to try and find out how KAOS is getting nuclear weapons. As they work together Max is able to show Agent 99 that he is a good field agent. They also discover that they have feelings for each other.
Max and 99 manage to infiltrate a weapons factory which is disguised as a bakery even though Siegfried is expecting them. Max and 99 overpower the Russians and even blow up some nuclear weapons in the plant. The Chief then sends Agent 23 (Dwayne Johnson) to help clean up the bakery, but he reports back to the Chief that there is no evidence of any nuclear weapons. This makes agent 99 and the Chief wary of Max and they think he is a double agent. Unfortunately, Max ends up in jail because nobody believes him when he says he isn't a double agent
Siegfried then tries to blackmail the American government by threatening to use nuclear weapons on the President and he threatens to send the weapons to unstable dictators unless he receives $200 billion dollars. However, Max manages to escape from prison and save 99 and the President from the real double agent.
This movie is action packed and fun and for those of us old enough, has many reminders of what endeared us to the original television series. There is also a plot twist which you probably won't see coming. There are quite a few humorous moments as the movie pokes fun of a couple of computer nerds ( Nate Torrence and Masi Oka) who work for CONTROL. There are also the typical bubbling moments that plague Maxwell Smart, things that make him endearing to us. The movie ends with Max and 99 dating and sharing a puppy. Of course the movie wouldn't be called Get Smart if it didn't end with Max getting hurt one more time with his own pocket knife. Funnyman Bill Murray has a cameo role in the movie as an agent hiding in a tree. This is the perfect movie for the whole family. I enjoyed it so much, I got it on DVD.
