Most child hood educators will tell you that if you leave your child alone and give them toys to play with they will learn to play with that toy on there own and that there isn't any need to actually teach your child anything. Being a mother myself I have realized that you have to teach your child, the more you work with them and the more you talk to them the more they are going to learn. They will actually learn faster and more efficiently if you work with them and show them how the toy works or how to color or sound out words with them. You should work with your toddlers to teach them their alphabet and how to count to 10, you should work with them to sound out names and words and help them try to read books. Colors are also an important thing that parents should help their children learn, rather it be through a toy or through reading they should help them learn them. Shapes are another good thing to learn, you can also use shapes and colors together to help them learn them at the same time.
If you stick 3 toddlers in a room with a bunch of toys and a few books and tell them to go play, and take another group of toddlers and stick them in a room with their parents and some toys and a few books and tell them to play, the group of children in the room with their moms are going to learn 10 times quicker and 10 times more efficient than the children playing on their own. They don't have anyone pushing them and constantly showing them how something works and what they are suppose to do. If you watch channel 8 on cable television sometimes they show you examples of the research that they have done on children from 9 months to 4 years of age. Of course though this is just my opinion, some people believe that if you leave children alone and let them play on there own that they are going to learn the same thing as they would learn with someone showing them. That might very well be true but with being a parent and watching my toddler grow I believe that she is learning more and faster when I show her how to do something instead of letting her learn on her own. Somethings though you have to let your children learn on there own and most of the time they will do rather well with it. I will forever believe that parents hold the key to their child's development and how smart they end up being once they become and adult, along with going to school and getting the proper amount of sleep and what not. It all plays an important role in your child's development and how much they are going to learn. There is a reason why they aren't born with the skills needed to get through life and why they have parents to take care of them.
