So long as you are willing to put up with the initial and supporting costs associated with owning a computer, there is really no reason not to own one. If it is one's goal to use a computer daily, then the connivance of ownership would out-weigh the negatives otherwise associated with the experience. As for those occasional horror stories that surface? That's just part of the fun and agony computer owners share together!
Before the internet helped make computers above the mail and phone systems as a tool specialized in interconnectivity, computers started at a more humble beginning. Simple calculator, simple entertainment, simple interest, the first real advantage of the computer in the home was its writing application. Gone were the days with the typewriter that if you made just one keystroke error it meant starting over from the beginning with printed word. Here instead was the start where a misspelling or grammar error was something that wasn't just something to be corrected, but the writing program would point to and help with the command of language. It was, and still is, a tool of knowledge.
Not long after computers were just establishing themselves in homes; the internet, Compact Disks, and a great multitude of other technological wonders were beginning to emerge as well. Despite the number of people that thoroughly curse the annoying sound of the dial up process, it was synonymous with the access of the world network, the internet. From the internet things continued to evolve and communications were instantaneous through email, research was no longer devoted to hours of search within books and libraries, and even international borders were disappearing into the past. The advantages even at the early stages were too many to count, and it hasn't stopped yet.
Today the advantages are overwhelming. Whether it is shopping online, ordering movies, downloading songs, watching DVDs, watching television through the TV card, or simply taking advantage of all the websites, information, and even working without leaving your home, the computer is everything. Everything to everybody scattered throughout the globe as its own community and world, and to get entry it doesn't take more than a system, simple connections, and a basic understanding to get into the game.
What's the biggest advantage of owning a computer? Live in the past with all the inconveniences of the past, or live in the evolving form of the future and a world at your fingertips. Learn enough about that internal electronic world and even the real world may not remain as distant. What can a computer do for the owner is nothing. What a computer and its owner do together is anything they want.
