Feeding the poor today and everyone on the planet tomorrow: What are the issues, and what can be done to avert a global food crisis?

Title endorsed in part by:

to United Nations, the number of the world's hungry has surged from 854 million last year to 967 million. This is due to the prices of staple foods that have ballooned in the past.

In order to address the issues on food crisis, High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told the Geneva-based Human Rights Council that it must target its work towards helping the most marginalized segments of society. This means that something must be done to help the hungry people from the poorest countries have food to eat on their table.

Many international organizations are active in helping the poor people meet their needs. Yet this move does not suffice to provide for the millions of people who go hungry everyday. As this crisis on food worsens, so do people who go hungry everyday.
And as the population balloons especially in poor countries, crisis on food will worsen.

In the Philippines
alone, thousands of people are living on the streets begging for food and money in order to ease their hunger. Many people from the rural areas had moved to the cities thinking that they could find a job but end up living on the streets due to unemployment. The agricultural lands in the rural areas are not anymore productive due to lack of water and the effect of global climate change, urging people from rural areas to move to the urban areas in order to find other means of livelihood. What were once productive agricultural lands that provided well for the farmers have failed to yield due to poor agricultural management. The IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) which is the world's leading rice research and training center based in the Philippines
is trying to introduce better varieties of rice that could endure the changing climate.

Yet in most parts of the Philippines, many agricultural lands are being abandoned for failure to produce good crops or else planted with trees and other plants other than the staple food of Filipinos that is rice. People could not do anything to address the food crisis issue because nature has intervened.

The main issue in this food crisis is how to address the problem and lessen the number of hungry people in the world. With the drastic global climate change which is the worst problem for farmers, something has to be done to make farming recover from the crisis. Research is being done to grow better varieties of food products. There are new methods of growing vegetables today other than planting them on land. And it has proven that there are ways and means of solving the global food crisis
