Creating a goddess altar

The building of an altar is sacred working- and the Goddess will bless your efforts if they're done in the right mindful state, worship. Before you begin assembling supplies and designing elaborate water features, stop to ask the Goddess for her guidance in building your altar. You need not devote vast spaces to an altar, just a corner of your dresser will do. The Goddess has all the room anyways, so she's okay with a smaller portion of your dwelling.

Candles are a way to offer fire, one of the Goddess' elements, and a great way to see your altar. The other elements can also be represented on your altar, if you'd like to. Commonly, incenses are used for representing air, a dish with water for water, and another small dish holds earth, be it dirt, sand or stones. The elements are optional, and each has their own uniqueness that you'll learn about by working with them. According to certain traditions, the elements are to be aligned in a particular North-South fashion. The Goddess knows not everyone can tell which way is magnetic North, and will not be offended by your altar so long as you have Her goodness in your heart.

Statues or pictures can be a beautiful way to represent the Goddess on your altar. Classical art abounds with images of Her and her many facets. You don't need to rely on someone else's idea of the Goddess however. If you feel her presence from a simple smooth stone, it is sacred and worthy of being placed upon your altar. Perhaps a certain young actress has such a seductive smile you think she's channeled Aphrodite; using a photograph from a magazine of this movie star can help you connect with the Goddess of love. Are you working to be a stronger competitor in your job? Let the warrior goddesses help you by adding a blade to your altar and asking for their strength. If an object helps you connect with the Goddess, it is worthy of being included in your altar. Using items to represent certain aspects of the Godess can help you to focus on areas where you need Her help. While certain things are easy to associate, you can be creative in your representations.

Your altar need not be left out all the time. If you'd feel more connected leaving your altar open at all times, go ahead. There is no right or wrong way to set up an altar to our dear Goddess. Any space in which you've prayed, dreamt or wished can be an altar, but a dedicated working space is really magical. It can be as simple as a few trinkets on the windowsill to as fancy as golden statues on marble pedestals, and they're all just right. If you find your needs changing, your altar can reflect that at as well, it's an extension of you really. Bless your space and be blessed.
