A guide to shopping on Etsy.com

There are a few things about buying handmade items that you need to know to make the experience a good one. As a four-year member of Etsy, I have learned a few important things about buying handmade goods on Etsy.

1. Searching takes patience. Stick with it, and you will find something great!

2. Handmade items are one of a kind. Therefore, if you see something you simply cannot live without, BUY IT! There may never be another one made.

3. If you see something that is almost what you want, don't hesitate to contact the seller and ask if there is any way they can make a custom one for you. Most sellers on Etsy are more than happy to accommodate.

4. If you cannot find anything close to what you want, make a custom request using the "Alchemy" page under the "Custom" tab. You will write a description of what you are looking for and add any inspirational pictures you might have, then wait for Etsy crafters to bid on your custom job. There is no obligation to accept an offer, and you can accept more than one bid.

5. Once you have purchased something, make sure you complete the payment process through Paypal, if that is your payment method. If you don't, most sellers will cancel your purchase within a week or two, some even sooner.

6. Don't be afraid to contact sellers through the "Conversations" feature. Most will answer promptly and are very friendly. Make sure that you check your conversations often if they aren't automatically forwarded to your email address.

7. Once you have received your item, make sure to leave positive feedback for your seller! This is only available for 90 days, so don't forget. Feedback is crucial for sellers to build a good reputation, and it's always great to know that you are buying from a trusted source.

8. If you see a shop that has great style, but not the type of items you are looking for, make sure to check that seller's favorite shops and items. If they make products that you like, then they have probably favorited other items that you will like.

9. Come to terms with the fact that a lot of handmade items are going to cost more than commercial products. This is because hand-crafting each item takes more time and effort. Usually, this results in a higher quality product, so the extra money is worth it.

10. If you are looking for a great deal, don't forget to check the Promotions forum under the Community tab. There are usually numerous shops advertising sales and discounts, but be prepared to sift through a lot of different items. This is not advisable if you are looking for a specific item, due to the broad spectrum of products you will see.

Keep these tips in mind, and your next buying experience on Etsy will be smooth sailing!
