Spring and summer styles are generally a variation on the same theme; pastel colours, thin materials and feminine styles. This summer however, there are some very unique differences, with the trends taking their inspiration from timeless classical pieces and eighties inspired items.
Leggings and long tops are in' once more, and wet look' leggings seem to be everywhere on the high street. Bright colours combined and clashed with paler pastels are helping to liven up to more usual styles whilst some slightly more unusual items are also making an appearance.
Jumpsuits, for instance are making a statement. Seen on all the catwalks from YSL to DKNY, Etro to Chlo these versatile items will be a key piece this season. Long, short, strapless or harem style, jumpsuits are great for both the day and summer evenings, when combined with the right accessories. Sandals or pumps, an over the shoulder bag, sporty sunglasses and a beaded necklace or headband, would make an ideal outfit for hitting the shops or the beach. However, when combined with heels and a statement necklace the outfit perfectly suits a summer evening.
Tulip skirts are also making their mark on this season's style, and make a must for any summer suitcase. What makes these skirts so great is that they can fix any figure; the tulip shape helps to give slender girls curves, whilst also managing to hide wide hips. A pair of towering heels help to give the impression of longer slender legs and when added to a pastel coloured tulip skirt, the look is complete.
One shoulder dresses are also making a comeback, if the catwalks are anything to go by, especially when in bright block colours or prints. They help to show off a great summer tan and like the tulip skirts and jumpsuits are easily accessorised to suit day or night.
Colour is always fundamental to a season's style, and this season its all about clashing them; blue and purple, are both perfect in pastel and in bold bright colours and compliment each other perfectly. Likewise with yellow and red; forget the little black dress, this season it's all about the little red dress and the yellow helps give it a bold edge perfect for making a statement this summer. Pink and green are also proving big, focus on texture and print detailing in the green in order to prevent looking like an eco warrior and if pink seems too girly, combine it with patent or studded accessories to 'toughen up the look'.
Also impacting the styles this season are sheer fabric and denim. Sheer tops help make a very feminine look with a hint of sex appeal. If a completely sheer top seems to daunting, then sheer sleeves gives a nice spring style balance. It's no surprise then denim is still in fashion, it's been the staple fabric for many, many years, and this year is no different. Washed out shades and ripped detailing are expected to be seen in the high street and when brightened up with neon pastels and retro sunglasses are perfect for the festival season.
