From a Christian's perspective, the problem with many self-proclaimed 'pro-life' anti-abortionists in North America is that they have lost sight of values due to to what appears to be temporary insanity based on unreasoned passion. This is problematic because many of them claim to be representing God's view on the subject of abortion when they don't have a leg to stand on. Those who maintain they are expressing a Biblical view employing terminologies such as "the sanctity of life", really need to start listening th what Scriptures have to say. Otherwise their misrepresentation of God can be more damaging to humanity than the countless abortions that continue to be performed every year.
Anyone who is serious about knowing what God thinks about abortion needs to start by searching the Scriptures. In so doing they would find that God is conspicuously silent on the topic. The only oblique references to life before birth are found in the Old Testament books of Exodus, Job, and Psalms.
Psalm 139:13 says: "For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother's womb". This and similar passages state the obvious: God is Creator of life, and naturally, human life begins in the womb with the fertilization of a female egg. But to suggest that this implies that the process cannot be altered under any circumstances requires such a leap of rationalization that it defies logic. It would be like rationalizing that ships should never sail beyond the horizon because there is a passage in the Bible that refers to the four corners of the world, hence the world must be flat.
Exodus 21:20-24 on the other hand does reveal God's mind when it comes to the relative value He places on unborn human beings. It states: "And if men struggle with eachother and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him; and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life, eye for eye, etc.". Clearly there is a differentiation between life in the womb and life beyond the gestation period.
What does this mean? Is our Creator not concerned about fetuses being aborted by the millions? Surely we need to protect the helpless babies who cannot help themselves. This of course is the knee-jerk response of the activists who paint anyone who disagrees with them as a 'pro-death' baby killer!
But where does the anti-abortion
