How many can say that they are 100% something? Not many... we are living in a melting pot of race. I can honestly say that I am 100% Khmai. My kids on the other hand are 50% Khmai & 50% mutt. They think mommy talks funny when grandma (yei)and I talk. They don't know that they are different from their friends. They have English names and we eat American food at home. Am I putting my kids in a position for identity crisis as they get older? Should I push the Cambodian culture more so they know that yes, they are different? I also don't want them to feel like I did when I was growing up. I felt inferior to my peers eventhough I came to the US at the age of 4. I want them to feel comfortable in their own skin. Where is the balance of keeping your culture but still assimilate into the norm? I am a 1st generation Asian -American but my kids are the true Asian American.
