It is the opinion of the author that businesses should develop a closer relationship to their staff, through the use of union recognition. Since the core of most businesses are their staff and their personality, it should be clear that one way of contributing to an increased competitive advantage and productivity for the business is to create a secure and stable working environment, which secondly would also create higher stability for the organisation.
In creating a relationship with a Trade Union or Unions in the workplace, the business should enhance their capability to retain staff and help create a more stable environment with better working conditions and loyalty. It is recognised in the current business environment that the employees of a business is among the organisations greatest asset and that the cooperation with unions is becoming a part of the most modern and progressive business environment (Barber, B., 1998).
Through a new relationship within the hospitality industry, the business and the unions should try to develop procedures and benefits that will enhance the final product for both parties and increase the outcome of the product in relation to the customer's value chain (Porter, M., 1985). For the Trade Unions such a relationship would assist them in gaining new ground and by such increase their member density in the workplace. This increase should help them to re-develop their power and their structure. It is clear that they should keep working within their fields of expertise, such as working conditions, increased employee growth and workplace stability. This could be done through encouraging their members to participate in training schemes both developed and funded by the business and the unions and also encourage members to gain further qualifications and skills to assist in personal development, which consequently should enhance the product of the business. This together with the managerial school of thought that the employees that make up the organisation is its greatest asset and the individuals need to be developed and nurtured as a resource (Ridley, S. 1995).
In addition, the business organisations must ensure that their participation is whole heartedly and that the cooperation between the parties is at an even level. It should be the responsibility of both the company and the unions to ensure even contribution and commitment. This should be done through open negotiations when regarding the business results and designing future strategies
