When you think of a school, what do you think of?
You'll probably think of a place where children go to learn about their arithmetic, their language arts, their history, as well as other courses in fine arts, technology, etc. Schools offer children an outlet for learning, but also for communicating and being with their friends. A school is like a community center, because it gives students a chance to find their way through life. But nowadays, parents are sending their kids to schools, and they're just expecting more. And so the question is raised - are our schools preparing our children for the future?
This is a hard question to answer. Because even before answering this, are our schools even the right place to be teaching our children what the future holds for them? Shouldn't the parents as well be teaching their children how to lead successful lives? The children are our future - where haven't you heard that before? But, it's true. I do think, though, that schools aren't entirely responsible for teaching them that. Sure, they do need to prepare students for college, mainly, but it's the parents' jobs to prepare their children.
The teachers, I believe, are doing a good job. I guess it depends on the type of teacher your student gets. If the teacher is giving easy work, then your student probably isn't being prepared the best he/she can be. But, if the teacher is following college standards, and prepares the students to their fullest, then your child will be getting the benefit of the doubt.
Now, the parents have the hardest job. I believe being a parent is the toughest job a person can have. After all, they have to care and look after this child they now suddenly have for the rest of their lives. It's a scary job, being parent. And, all that includes getting your kid ready for the real world. Not just college, but life after college - Starting a career, buying a home, finding a wife, and raising their children. It's all important, and those are things that a high school cannot teach.
In the end, the schools could be preparing students better, but they're doing their jobs, which is to teach the selected courses. And are they preparing the best they can? Well, I guess that one's up to the school you send your child to, and the teachers your child has. It isn't the teachers, though, that will end up making the biggest difference in your child's life. Parents need to step up sometimes. Some parents are great parents. My parents are great parents. But others need to define the role of the "parent" and be just that.
