Movie reviews: Repo! The Genetic Opera

by Melody Little

Created on: March 16, 2009

This is the best movie I have seen in a while. This movie was produced through Lionsgate and directed by Darren Lynn Bousman; Darren also wrote and directed Saw 2, and directed Saw 3, and 4. Repo The Genetic Opera takes place in the future, the year 2056, when desease and plastic surgury are common. The acting is superb and the vocals are phenomenal. This is truly a must-see film. As the movie starts you are hearing of this painkiller zydrate and the people addicted to it, the repo man, and organ financing. This epidemic of organ failures swept through the world making this company, GeneCo, make getting an organ like getting a car, but just like buying a car you can get those organs repossessed by the repo man (legal assasins hired by Gene Co). This world is full of addicts and murder, murder at this time is sanctioned by law.

Then you see this young sheltered girl, Alexa Vega (Spy Kids), who searches for the cure to her disease that she believes came from her deceased mother. As Shilo visits her mothers mosuleum she goes out into a world she has never really seen, Where she meets Graverobber (Terrence Zdunich, who is one of the writers). Graverobber is the drug dealer of the future, you see Zydrate comes from cadavers. As the song 21st Century Cure is sung by Graverobber and Shilo they must run from GeneCops, as they do she faints from a blood pressure problem. When Shilo awakes, we first meet her overprotective father Nathan ( Anthony Head) and he tells her to take her medicine. As they finish arguing Nathan storms out to get ready for his night job as the head of the repo men, but he doesn't tell Shilo, because he fears it would break her trust.

The story changes, involving a comic strip telling you what is going on, and goes to the story of the owner of GeneCo Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino) and his spoiled children - Pavi Largo (Nivek Orge), his youngest son who is addicted to complete face replacements and believes he will inherit GeneCo; Luigi Largo ( Bill Mosley) his oldest son who has completely modified his body to the perfect body and also thinks when his father passes he will inherit GeneCo; and finally Amber Sweet (Paris Hilton), his daughter who is addicted to Zydrate and surgery who thinks that she will get to perform as the voice of GeneCo after Blind Mag (Sarah Brightman) quits. Rotti finds out that he is dying and gets hold of Shilo, promising her that he has the cure for her disease, we find out later in the movie that Rotti and Shilo's mother had
