She embodied everything that I wanted to be. Funny, beautiful, energetic, outgoing, and crazy all rolled in to one adventurous package. And, she was a twin, which seemed to make her even more appealing to others. I was amazed that I had so much in common with this person and we very soon became best friends. We did everything together. It was my sophomore year in high school and I had just gotten my license. We went everywhere together. I knew that she could be slightly untrustworthy, but I didn't know the extent of it. And, I never knew that untrustworthiness would apply to our friendship.
The backstabbing and deceit started off small. One day I would hear that she was bashing what I was wearing, the next I would hear that she was blaming me for money that was missing from her mother's drawer. Money that I knew for fact she had taken. Yet, I persisted with our friendship. I thought people were just talking because of jealousy. I never dreamed to imagine that these were things that she was actually saying. I never had a clue that she just may be jealous of me.
One day, she and I decided to go browsing for makeup after school. We typically would go to a store and pick out things that we liked and show one another before replacing it on the shelf. We lived in a pretty small town and there wasn't much else to do. Well, on this particular day, she didn't place her items back on the shelf. She pocketed most all of it. As we were leaving, I exited through the sensors before she did and was just about out the door when I heard the beeping of the alarm. I turned in dumbfounded amazement as I noticed that it was my friend who had triggered the horrible noise. The embarrassed employee came up to her to ask if she had anything on her with tags. She sheepishly produced some makeup from her pocket. No, the employee told her, this has no code. She pulled out yet more and again had the same response. Finally, my friend looked to the store worker and asked to go to a back room to take care of this. The employee nodded and began to lead her away. I was shocked. I just stood there not sure what to do. My friend turned to me and pleaded, "Please, come with me." I thought nothing of it and walked with her.
As it turned out, we both were arrested. She for stealing almost $120 dollars worth of makeup and perfume. I for being an accomplice. What? I was amazed. I had no clue, but never once did she come to my aid and say that I was innocent. She allowed me to take the fall with her.
