How to succeed on any freelance site

by Dawn Hawkins

Freelancing is a great way to allow yourself the freedom to work from the comfort of your home without a boss hanging over your head. Knowing how to succeed at it is a different story. Being prepared is the best way to ensure your success as a freelancer. Going in blindly could mean you will fall flat on your face.

Freelancing means that you work for yourself. You choose the jobs that you want to take and you can walk away from it at anytime that you choose. You are not stuck without opportunities to rise to the top because you are already there. You see signs all over the place for "be your own boss" jobs. That is what freelancing is all about.

There are various types of jobs in the freelance market. The most notable is writing. Sites like Helium.com and AssociatedContent.com are great sites to start at if you are a writer. You will learn while you earn and that is never a bad thing. Here are some tips to help you succeed as a freelancer in this not so dog-eat-dog market:

Decide On Your Expectations

There is a large volume of sites for freelancers to obtain work. You should first decide what you want out of it. Know how much money you would like to make from it. Don't set unrealistic goals because this will lead you to fall into many traps. Freelance sites allow you to apply to certain jobs. That doesn't promise that you will get it. Understand that you will need to keep on top of things in order to make it work.

Beware of Scam Sites

There are leeches out there that want to attach themselves to your wallet. They will suck all of the money out of it and leave you scratching your head. Understand that freelancing isn't a get rich quick scheme. Legitimate sites do exist. They will not promise you, if you sign up today, that you will be rich by tomorrow morning. Legitimate sites also don't ask you to pay them. If you have to pay money in order to make it, chances are, you have found a scam site. Resist the temptation and be willing to work for the money you earn.

Networking

Networking with other freelancers will help you get a grip on what sites are the best ones. Those that are experienced at it will gladly share with you their experiences on such sites. The competition is tough as more and more people make the move from going to the workplace to working from their homes. Talking to others and following their advice could mean all the difference in the world to your success.

Make a Name for Yourself

Get your name out there. This means more networking. You want your name to be known so that people who will potentially hire you can see you. Use blogs and sites such as Myspace and Facebook to promote yourself. You want the image to come out as professionally as possible. Your computer is now your office and the internet is your co-worker/boss. Even if you are sitting in your pajamas, you want to present an image that you are well dressed with your hair combed. Professionalism is the key to getting better jobs.

Build a Portfolio of Your Work

It is extremely important to build a portfolio of your work to present to potential "employers". This is what can make or break you. You will want the portfolio to show why you should be chosen before anyone else. It showcases your work so make it your best work. If you are a writer, have as many great articles as you can on Helium.com or AssociatedContent.com. If you want to make the portfolio even better, put work on both sites. Write on a variety of subject matters. This will show that you are versatile.

Have a Backup Plan

You want to know that you will have income at all times. Freelancing means that you need to have several avenues in which you can make money. Versatility is important. Stretch yourself beyond the boundaries and seek out other ways in which you can make money online. You do not want to be caught without a guaranteed way to earn. Freelance jobs that you bid on are a great way to pay the bills, if you get the job. Until you have a steady flow of work from repeat business, you need to know where that income is going to come from.

You should also have a bit of savings to last you for a little while as you first begin this adventure. Do not quit your job thinking that you can just jump into a freelance position and everything will be fine. You have to build the business up before it will take off. Having a cushion helps.

Be Knowledgeable

You need to know computer programs and how to run them well. These include Microsoft Word and Excel. There are many other programs that you should know as well. Study what many places want you to know in order to land a job. This will give you a better insight on what you should educate yourself about. There are jobs for writing, proofreading, office assistants and even accounting positions. Decide which field you would prefer and learn as much about it as you can. Taking a few courses wouldn't hurt.

Dedication

You should be dedicated to making freelancing work for you. You will need to set your hours and stick to them. Don't let distractions in so that you can get your work done. Freelancing can be a tough road to travel if you don't have yourself organized in such a way that you will be profitable from it. Be willing to put some extra time and effort in at times you may not feel like it. You may be away from the workforce as most people know it, but you aren't free from your bills. If you want to meet those needs, you need to give it all you have.

Making yourself aware of the downfalls of being a freelancer and pitting them against the benefits of it will help you decide if this is truly the right move for you and your family. You must set yourself up for success. If you can do that, you will be well on your way to succeeding as a freelancer.
