Fashion trends for the spring and summer of 2009 are a heady mixture of old and new. We can see the re-emergence of certain trends of the past with a modern edge to take them into the future.
Fabrics
The opaque look has made its way back into the fashion world in the form of see through fabrics. They may be a part of a particular garment, or separate clothing items in their own right. From layers of shimmering sheer fabrics worn as a cover up over the shoulders to patches of nude fabric adding cheekiness to dresses, sheer is definitely here.
Softness is the key word when it comes to material this year. Natural fibers of silk and cotton are the latest trend, adding to the feminine factor being concentrated on for women at present.
Colors
Color fans are in for a treat in 2009. The fashion pallet has increased to include bright spring colors and jelly bean shades for the summer months. Daffodil yellow, azure blue, orange and raspberry red are all set to take the high-street by storm. Green is also here in a big way and so is the metallic color range of gold, silver and bronze.
Neutral shades will still be available too and are great for toning down and color balancing when you need it. Beige, white, tan and brown can create a soothing effect or help pull an outfit together.
Styles
The fitted look has returned. Once more nipped in waists will accompany garments such as flowing romantic gowns and little neat, 1940's styled jackets with a great color range to lighten the mood of observers.
Detailing like fringes and embellishments can be seen on everything from high heeled shoes to funky 1970's styled suede jackets. Tassels swing from short dresses adding the dimension of fashion in motion, while cutaway areas on clothes bring in more of a theme once associated with bondage or fetish wear.
Accessories
Colorful beach bags containing designer flip flops for casual wear are in and as always, sunglasses make an appearance as the weather improves and allows us to don glasses with neutral frames, or those that match key colors in our wardrobes.
Belts in metallic shades to complement shoes and jewelery help to show off the waists of their wearers and keep them up to date with style. Silk bands of bright flashes of color add a dramatic feel and replace belts on garments in need of a pick me up.
Key Pieces
A must have for spring is a colorful short, belted trench coat for unexpected showers. Colorful light knitwear is also in fashion and will become a key fashion item in your collection. Shift dresses with art prints are a main feature coming from japan and decorative heels are needed for evening wear.
Jewelry that is bold and bohemian is set to become an important fashion feature. Statement pieces set with single gemstones in an architectural, geometric setting and one off designs flatter and intrigue.
