Albuquerque, New Mexico is a quintessential town with a vast amount of culture and attractions to visit. It also is the home to many delicious Mexican restaurants. Here is a guide to some of my favorites in the area:
1. Cervantes Restaurant and Lounge. 5801 Gibson Blvd SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, (505) 262-2253
Cervantes is a great New Mexican restaurant that is authentic, comfortable, but also upscale. The prices are good (~$10 per meal), the Spanish atmosphere is really fun with a jukebox and margarita pitchers, and the food is authentic and tasty. Some of my favorite menu items are the green chile stew, the seafood enchiladas, the sopaipillas stuffed with ground beef or the carne adovada. Each dish comes with rice and beans on the side, which are delicious, and of course the table comes with tostada chips and salsa that are fantastic. They actually sell the salsa by the bottle as well, so it is definitely worth checking out.
2. Padilla's Mexican Kitchen. 1510 Girard Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NE 87106, (505) 262-0115
If you're looking for a more local New Mexican restaurant, Padilla's is a great option. It has a more neighborhood feel than Cervantes with excellent warm service, and the food is still great. Try out the carne adovada, the blue corn enchiladas, or the sopaipillas.
3. Duran Central Caf. 1815 Central NW, Albuquerque, NM 87106, (505) 247 4141
For a different feel, check out Duran Caf. It has a more casual feel (it actually is combined with a drugstore) and has great food. Despite the plain ambiance, the tortillas are homemade and really special and the meals are great too.
4. El Norteno. 1431 Wyoming NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, (505) 299-2882
If you are interested in the more traditional "Mexican" rather than "New Mexican" cuisine, there are also some great options in Albuquerque. El Norteno recently reopened in a new location. The food here is great, served in large portions, and it has a nice ambiance as well. The food is truly authentic Mexican, and everything is delicious. Try the queso fundido as your starter, the delicious cochinit pibil or the monturas (the pork is so tasty here), and the pastel de tres leches for dessert. You'll love it!
5. Dos Hermanos. 2435 Wyoming Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112, (505) 294-8945
Finally, if you are looking for Mexican breakfast, nothing beats a breakfast burrito at Dos Hermanos. They are huge and there are several options (though you can always design your own), and are served with some delicious red or green chile. Yummy!
Whichever restaurant you decide to go to, you are sure to get some delicious Mexican flavors!
