Pub reviews: The Waverley, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland

by Gordon Hamilton

The Waverley is a pub in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, to be found at 344 Main Street. It sits near the bottom of the hill, close to what is commonly known as Wishaw Bottom Cross. There are many still who will know it by one of its previous names, such as Georgia Brown's or The Boozer.

The Waverley is a very cosmopolitan pub in that it caters to very different crowds at different times of the day and week. During the day on weekdays, the regulars tend to be such as horse racing aficionados, watching the live racing on one of the Waverley's four TV screens and perhaps stepping out to the bookmakers only fifty yards or so down the hill for an occasional punt. The Waverley does good drinks promotions at these times and even if the horses don't win, the bar tab is not too sore on the pocket.

At nights during the week, there is of course very often live football (soccer) on the TV. The Waverley has both Sky Sports and Setanta Sports and therefore whatever channel the big match is on, it can be shown.

Thursday nights in The Waverley sees Quiz Night taking place. Starting around eight-thirty to nine o'clock, the quiz is open to teams of up to six members and takes the form of four different rounds on different subjects. It costs a pound per team member to take part and the winning team at the end of the night scoops the prize. There are also other games held following the quiz, such as "Play Your Cards Right," which is run in the form of a raffle for a pound a ticket. Tickets are then drawn at random for the individual's chance to test their luck and hopefully win a prize.

Friday nights in The Waverley sees a DJ providing entertainment while live entertainment is provided each Saturday night. The Waverley can consequently get very busy on those nights. Saturday and Sunday during the day are again devoted chiefly to the sports' enthusiasts but a Sunday from five in the evening until nine sees Karaoke provided and this also can be quite popular.

The Waverley sells a variety of draught beers, lagers, cider and stout. Belhaven, Tennents and Guinness are just some of the options available. There are also of course a selection of traditional spirits, mixers and soft drinks to choose from.

The Waverley has a pool table on a raised platform at the rear of the pub and a beer garden is accessed via a door at the far end of the bar. The beer garden is in the form of an enclosed wooden decking area, with several traditional wooden beer garden tables. There is a covered area also for the smokers when it "occasionally" rains in Wishaw!

The Waverley is therefore a pub which caters to a wide variety of tastes and age groups at different times and can offer something at some time to most people. If you live in Wishaw, or simply happen to be in the area, why not give it a try?
