There is a safe, natural product that is perhaps the best alternative to sugar. Unfortunately it seems to be relatively unknown and is seldom mentioned in all the talk about the harmful side effects of sugar and sugar substitutes. The sweetener is called "xylitol" and its properties and health benefits should put it at the top of the list for sugar alternatives.
XYLITOL IS SAFE
Xylitol is safe for diabetics as it metabolizes slowly when ingested. It does not cause a sudden increase in blood sugar and the body handles it differently from other sugars. The sweetener is found in natural sources such as vegetables and fruits and is even produced in the human body. It is made from birch bark, was first manufactured by a German chemist in 1891 and is currently being used extensively by other countries. It has no known toxic levels, though diarrhea can result when taken in large doses. It has been studied in long-term clinical trials and is approved by the FDA and other regulatory bodies.
XYLITOL TASTES GOOD
As we know many sugar substitutes have aftertastes that are unpleasant. Xylitol has no aftertaste and is as sweet as sucrose with 40% less calories and 75% less carbs.
XYLITOL HAS MANY USES
Xylitol looks a lot like white sugar and comes in a granulated form. One can substitute it cup for cup in place of sugar in recipes. It can be used for baking, cooking, and can be dissolved in beverages. Xylitol is now found in chewing gum due to its ability to prevent cavities and gum disease.
XYLITOL'S HEALTH BENEFITS
Xylitol has a host of benefits for the user. Most know about the benefits for dental health, but there are others. Xylitol
1. Creates an alkaline state in saliva that stops acid attacks which cause cavities
2. Prevents growth of bacterias that cause dental decay and ear infections
3. Can aid in the reversal of bone loss by increasing calcium absorption in the intestines
4. Reduces cravings for sugar and carbs
5. Inhibits yeast growth and other harmful gut bacteria
6. Reduces allergic reactions, including asthma when used as a nasal wash
7. Reduces plaque formation and increases mineralization
8. By lowering insulin levels, helps with hormonal imbalances
Xylitol is not as well known as other natural and artificial sweeteners. Though it may cost more than regular sugar, the health benefits are worth it. Look for it in chewing gum and even chew a few pieces after a meal. It's good for you. It can even be left on your teeth overnight. We can choose to use artificial sweeteners that can have harmful side effects and aftertastes, or we can choose to use a safe, natural, good tasting sweetener and reap some pretty important health benefits.
