How to make a great sandwich

The sandwich is rumored to have been named after John Montagu who was England's 4th Earl of Sandwich. The story goes that he needed a quick snack at the poker table that he could eat while still playing and thus, the sandwich was born. Whatever it's origin it remains one of the most popular lunch and snack items in the world.

Different regions of the United States feature specialty sandwiches that use their local favorites. Try one of these delicious sandwiches for yourself whether at the poker table or in a little brown bag for work or school.

California brings us the California Veggie Sandwich: Spread herbed cream cheese on multigrain bread, add grated carrot, alfalfa sprouts, lettuce, tomato and slices of avacado and cucumber for a healthy vegetarian sandwich. As with most California vegetarian foods this is an extremely healthy lunch choice.

There is a town on Cape Cod named Sandwich and you can find this awesome Cape Codder sandwich in restaurants there:

Simply layer turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, lettuce and sliced red onions on marbled rye bread. No dressing is required for this one but you can add a little mayo if you wish. This sandwich is also well known in a lot of American families as "the day after sandwich, it is a delicious way to use up some of those Thankgiving leftovers.

This tasty sandwich is most often served warm has its roots in New York but Omaha often share it's claim to the Reuben Sandwich, the sandwich is made by piling on thin slices of hot corned beef or pastrami, swiss cheese and sauerkraut onto grilled rye bread with a generous dose of thousand Island dressing. Being of German heritage and having grown up in Connecticut and now living in the South this sandwich tastes just like home to me. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Visit New Orleans in the Southern part of our great country and you will find the Po'Boy sandwich. To make this classic simply spread yellow mustard, and mayo on a french roll then pile up the ham salami and American cheese. The Po'Boy is about as simple as sandwich making gets.

There are regional sandwich favorites in every part of the world and in every family. Elvis loved to eat Peanut Butter, banana and Bacon sandwiches and I frequently catch my son working up some equally unappetizing combination but the most important part of making a great sandwich is that you, the eater, love it.
