Poetry: Soldiers

by Roberta Lee Small

Created on: March 14, 2009

Why am I here and who made this plan

That I lay here a lion, a buck, or a bear

Struck down in my youth ne're to be man

Tomorrow, the future I never will share

A lover or husband I never will be

A child of my own I never will see

Was it the enemy that did this to me

He lays here beside me a lion is he

We two are heroes our countries will tell

Both on the battlefield they fell

Each side will shout for the victory they won

Each mother will sob for the loss of her son

Men in their greed for power and fame

Make plans then sit and watch the game

While the young men go and give heir life

Then are praised because of their sacrifice

I'm a soldier, a liberator, American, a troop they say

But I am just a boy who is dying this day

No one around just the enemy and I

He is dead and I will die

Two dead lions, bears, buffaloes, hare

In our deaths we two have something to share

We are the heroes
