Rhinoplasty: Correct your nose

by Marie Bywater

Created on: March 13, 2009

Nose surgery or nose jobs are becoming more common amongst celebrities and non-celebrities, young and old alike. Everyone seems to be obsessed on obtaining perfection and they see plastic surgery as one way to achieve this. It is estimated that over 350 000 Americans every year alone get plastic surgery on their noses. Plastic surgeons reshape the nose in order to improve either its function or appearance, or perhaps both. Some common procedures are increasing or decreasing the bridge of the nose, straightening a crooked nose as well as altering the size of the nostrils. These small changes can make a drastic difference to your face shape. The procedure is done under anesthetic, either general or local, and involves small incisions being made inside the nostrils, a reshaping of the cartilage and bone and then a closing up of the incisions.

Find a surgeon

A fantastic way to pick a surgeon is to view his past work. I know it is pretty much impossible to meet his previous patients, but he should have a portfolio of before and after pictures which you can view, and decide on his credentials from there. Other things that need looked at are qualifications, training and whether they are certified, which proves they have passed extensive examinations and have at least 5 years experience.

Cost

The average cost of a nose job depends on the individual's requirements, the extent of your surgery, the cost of pre and post care as well as the location of your surgery, for instance nose jobs in LA will cost considerably more than those in Eastern Europe. The cost is estimated to be anywhere from $3000 to $8000. For those interested in having a nose job it is wise to look around for a competitive price. Some constructive nose jobs such as those to correct breathing problems may be carried out for free within the health service.

Side effects

Nose surgery is not without risks such as infection and bleeding, like in other types of surgery, and there is also the chance that an individual will not be happy with the outcome. After having plastic surgery to the nose you can expect some swelling and bruising which should disappear after a week or so. However the positive results of surgery including an improved appearance and correction of breathing problems should outweigh the pain and swelling.

A nose job can give someone a new lease of life and a major boost of confidence, but before making the decision to get your nose done please research your surgeon well and make sure you get a competitive price.
