Poetry: Lost love

by K Snow

We traveled down the rutted road
The jeep tossing us from side to side
The road started out paved
But quickly went to dirt

Recent storms had left huge puddles
The road washing out in spots
With rivulets cutting long deep grooves
Down its length

The further we went the worse the road got
There was total isolation around
The landscape becoming more barren
With each rotation of the wheel

I grew more and more anxious
Wondering what we might find ahead
And not liking the path we were on
Nor the possible outcome

He said we might as well continue
Since we had no other place to be
Even though we both knew
This was a dead end

The road began to wind downhill
Becoming ever more turbulent
Potholes became more frequent
Conversation halted

Finally I asked if he thought we should go on
Due to the deplorable road conditions
He thought for a bit and finally agreed
To turn around

But of course there was no going back.
