Memoirs: My first cruise

by Sherri Trevino

Created on: March 13, 2009

I have always been a very lucky person. And as luck would have it, I won my first cruise in a drawing at a club where I used to go dancing. I guess you can imagine how exciting that was! It was an all expense paid Carnavel Cruise for two to the Bahamas for 4 days and 3 nights. It paid for everything, except for my travel expenses to Cape Canaveral. I was more than willing to pay for that flight in order to go on the cruise.

At the time I was dating someone, and of course, I asked him to go with me. The cruise was several months away, and our relationship fizzled out before time to take the cruise. So, just a few weeks before cruise time, I was left with no one to take with me. What a bummer. Lots of people wanted to go, but could not afford to pay for an airline ticket to get to the ship. Luckily, I found a girlfriend who was able to go, so we booked our flight, and off we went.

My friend was a girl that I met in College, and we were very close. She was married, and I was single, but her husband seemed to like me, and did not mind her going on the trip with me. I thought we would have a wonderful time, and I was really glad that she was the person going with me.

The flight was nice, and relatively short. We only had to fly from Atlanta to Cape Canaveral. However, I quickly found out that she did not like to fly, and she was afraid. I tried to be encouraging, because that is all you can do in a situation like that. Of course, we made it OK, and once we landed, she was fine again.

The ship was gorgeous! I was simply in awe. It reminded me a lot of being at a Mall. Yes, that's it. A Mall on water! I just knew that I was going to have the time of my life. Something that I would always remember! And I have always remembered it...that is for sure. But not in the way I thought at the time.

Let's just say that I found out I do not have good sea legs. The motion of the ocean did not agree with me at all. I was very sea sick once we hit the open sea. They say being on a cruise ship is like being in your living room. Well, it was not that way for me. I took pills for my sea sickness, and that helped. I was able to cope enough to eat a little bit, and play some slot machines. We also laid by the pool on the upper deck. But, I guess for the most part, I probably was not much fun. I remember that my friend went her own way (to the casino), when I wanted to go to the cabin and lie down.

Shortly before we docked in the Bahamas, my friend somehow twisted her knee. She had prior knee
