The case for Christian homeschooling

by Michele Connell

Created on: March 12, 2009

The term Homeschool - whether Christian or secular - has become skewed and distorted by the public in general. The ideas and concepts related to the subject are often twisted and re-arranged by those seeking to make judgments, and yet many have never even entered into the arena. Looking into the globe, how can one fully understand all the aspects related for and against something. Christian homeschooling has been named, and thus been segregated, from other educational avenues, and this has brought great distress for those parents who are working endlessly to offer their children a brighter future from one-on-one teaching and education. This unfair segregation has drawn a line making "Christian" schooling seem less plausible and acceptable - completely lacking in every aspect.

Christian homeschooling is just as proficient and educational as secular homeschooling and public school. All of the required, standard subjects are taught, and nothing less than what would be expected in a public school takes place within homeschool classrooms. My husband and I are Christians, and both of my children are homeschooled; however, I want to clarify that as much as we love Jesus, we don't, for instance, incorporate the subject of arithmetic with tithing. Tithing is something that we teach our children as parents, and in the church. Arithmetic is long division, fractions, and equations, etc.

Our curriculum includes the basic subjects - up to date with the education, and age level of other students. The only difference with Christian homeschooling is that we include Bible study and learning; It is a subject in itself, and important to our basis and what we believe. And we start the day with prayer - oh my goodness, I guess this puts everything else as non-efficient, right? WRONG!

Regardless if our children attended public school, this would still be taught in our home because of what and who we believe in, and that is Jesus Christ. This is the essential key to every argument. As Christians these values are taught at home by the parents regardless if the children go to public or home school.

Growing up in public school I have gained two perspectives in education. As a young girl we actually stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance, and yes we prayed. Now, things have become so difficult in public school, and children and/or teachers are crucified for just bringing in a Bible. How ridiculous! They will allow our children to be taught all types of worldly garbage, and yet prohibit Bible
