Furnishing a house on a budget

to find "good stuff" at a thrift store; after all, if it were "good," why would someone get rid of it? In truth, there are many reasons that quality items get donated. When people have to move suddenly, furniture becomes a liability, especially if they are moving to a smaller home or apartment. When older people pass away or become incapable of living independently, their children may not want their old furniture, and it can end up at the thrift store. Thrift stores, yard sales, and the classified ads in your local newspaper are all great places to find used furniture. Sites like E-Bay and Craiglist are also useful for finding deals.

If you still can't find what you need, you may need to buy some pieces new. However, even buying brand new furniture can be fairly easy on the wallet if you shop around and keep an open mind. Never become fixated on a brand name or a particular type of material. If that low-cost, particle board end table looks like a match for your antique oak coffee table, then it might as well be antique oak. A mass-produced piece may have a few imperfections, but unless you examine it closely, it will look just as attractive as a piece made to higher standards.

Try shopping online to get an idea for reasonable prices on a given item. You may be able to save by buying online, even after taking shipping into account. If not, then at least your online shopping will have given you a realistic price to search for in your area.

Finally, remember to purchase pieces that you will honestly be happy with in the long run. Never settle for an inexpensive piece because you "can always get a better one later". Changing your furnishings will, in the long run, be more expensive than paying up for a few special pieces in the first place. By furnishing your house with mostly free or cheap pieces, you can have some room in your budget for a few splurges. Overall, make sure that the look is something you will be happy with indefinitely. Furnishing your home comfortably on a tight budget is an endeavor that will take a lot of time and effort, but the result will be a home you can truly enjoy at a price you won't mind having paid.
