The best way to start seeds indoors

Growing plants, vegetables, herbs or flowers can be easy and fun if you know the basics. Starting your seeds indoors is an excellent way to start your garden early and it will save you money too. When temperatures are right you can plant outdoors instead of spending money on those starter plants.

The best way to start seeds indoors is to first choose a location with enough room, adequate sunlight and a warm temperature. Now, you need to decide what type of container to use for planting. The best type of container to use to start your seeds in is a humus container. They are small containers that allow for adequate drainage and can be planted right in the ground when the temperatures are right and seedlings are strong enough. You can use any type of a container as long as you have good drainage. Some other suggestions for containers are clay pots, cut down milk cartons with enough holes in the bottom or flats.

Most seed packets will give instructions on how to grow them. They will tell you the depth you need to plant at, the amount of sunlight it will need, how much space in between seeds, how much water and when to transplant so it is important to read the instructions. I would also suggest purchasing potting soil that is good for starting seeds. This type of soil will feed the plant as it grows.

Now you are ready to plant your seeds. Always be sure to fill your flat or container with the soil mixture to within about 1/2 - 3/4 inch of the top. Now place seed into soil and press down. Most fine seeds do not need to be buried. Firm the soil down so the seeds come in good contact with soil. Be sure to allow sufficient space in between seeds. Water the soil with a fine mist from a spray bottle. After planting the seed you can water regularly to keep moist.

After planting seeds remember to label each one. Keep it moist and be sure they get adequate sunlight. You can purchase a product like Miracle Grow to help feed and nourish your seedlings. Feeding will help in the growth, amount and appearance of your flowers and vegetables.

The germination period for most seeds are 12 to 14 days. Once you have a pair of true leaves you can thin the crowded areas of your seedlings by pulling out the weak ones or transplanting the healthier ones. This all depends on what you are planting and what type of a container you used.

Once my seeds have turned into strong, healthy seedlings I keep the soil moist and make sure they get enough sun. If you see any yellow leaves you can pinch them off, this will also help in the growth of your plant.

When temperatures are right and there is no danger of frost you can transplant your seedlings outside. You may want to set plants outside for a few hours a day first before you actually put them in the ground. This will help the seedling adjust to the outdoor climate and prevent shock.
