Historically, the previous season's MVP is the front-runner on repeating. The NBA has had plenty of repeat winners, then most of any other professional sport. Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, and Shaquille O'Neal have all had streaks of two or three awards in a row. The double-overtime Suns vs. Mavericks game cemented Steve Nash's name on the MVP award for the third straight year.
Here are the reasons why the NBA has already ordered the trophy engravers to etch Nash's name on the 06-07 MVP trophy. First off, he's in charge of every game he plays. He is pushing it up and down the floor getting Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudamire involved in games, early and often. Secondly, his stats in every category is the same or better than last year's statistics. The strongest argument against a previous year's winner of the MVP award is that you compare individual stats and if they are lower than the previous year and the team's Win-Loss record is worse, you don't win the trophy. Finally, the Suns are an amazing team this year. They have went on two separate streaks of 15+ wins in a row and during a 35 game streak, they have only lost three times. Of those three losses, two were in Overtime, and one of the losses could be contributed to the Suns being stuck in the Denver airport for hours, due to a snowstorm.
If Nash isn't going to win this year, who is? Dirk Nowitzki was the only other person that you can argue to win the MVP award. Nash's effort in the double-overtime game against the Mavericks kicked Nowitzki's legitimacy as a contender, out the door. Nash score 10 points in the last two minutes of the game and hit a late 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. Nowitzki had a chance to seal the game, but miss a free throw, which game Nash a chance to tie the game. In the second overtime, Nowitzki had a chance to redeem his hero status, but missed a jumper at the end of the second overtime, losing the game. I never thought that a season's MVP award could be determined with one single game, but I think we've witnessed it. I think we will be seeing another Canadian taking an MVP award home.
