While some men do wear skirts the majority of men choose not to. This is because, unless we are being rebellious, most of us tend to stick to wearing that which is deemed to be acceptable within the social group that we live in. Scotland is an example of a place where a particular style of skirt, called a kilt, is not only worn by many men, but doing so is encouraged in a healthy way. Because of this Scottish men are able to wear their kilts with pride.
While certain celebrities have occasionally been seen sporting skirts, most people tend to accept this as them being eccentric and wanting to grab the attention of the media. This has meant that skirt wearing hasn't entirely caught on in the world of everyday fashion for the average man.
In most western societies skirt wearing is still thought of as being a female prerogative which is indicative of femininity. No man wants to be accused of being feminine. The truth is that a clothing item can't make a man more of a man or a woman more of a woman. It is just our own perception that we have gained from people around us which colors our views, and which may leave us a little prejudiced without us realising this fact.
If skirt wearing for men was promoted by the media and a particular style of skirt which was labelled, 'just for men,' was placed in high street clothing stores, eventually many men would take the plunge and go ahead and wear a skirt. Women would begin to change their views about who should be wearing a skirt when it became normal to see men around them dressed this way.
Every now and then throughout history our ideas about what men and woman should do or wear has changed. Not so long ago women who wore trousers, or who went out of their way to become educated were frowned upon. It was even thought improper for women to ride bicycles!
Perhaps sometime soon our ideas about masculinity will widen to allow the majority of society to accept that men shouldn't have to wear clothing deemed as masculine, while women can wear whatever they like. This is an area of prejudice that hasn't fully been addressed, and for once it is women who have more freedom than their trouser clad male counterparts.
There is a high probability that this will occur if fashion is to move with the times. Long gone are the days when women were expected to refrain from many physical activities and sit prettily in their skirts at home, while men roamed the countryside playing sports and taking part in physical activities. When this was normal it was not surprising that men wore pants, rather than skirts. There is no need to wear a particular style of clothing now because of gender. It is personal choice which should count.
